No Deaths from Vitamins
America’s Largest Database Confirms Supplement Safety

(OMNS, Dec 28, 2011) There was not even one death caused by a vitamin supplement in 2010, according to the most recent information collected by the U.S. National Poison Data System.

The new 203-page annual report of the American Association of Poison Control Centers, published online at http://www.aapcc.org/dnn/Portals/0/2010%20NPDS%20Annual%20Report.pdf, shows zero deaths from multiple vitamins; zero deaths from any of the B vitamins; zero deaths from vitamins A, C, D, or E; and zero deaths from any other vitamin.

Additionally, there were no deaths whatsoever from any amino acid or dietary mineral supplement.

(OMNS Apr 8, 2011) “No pharmaceutical drug is devoid of risks from adverse reactions and vaccines are no exception. Vaccination is a medical intervention and should be carried out with the informed consent of those who are being subjected to it.” (Dr. Lucija Tomljenovic, University of British Columbia.)

Vitamin C & The Law

Linda’s comment:  AMEN to this statement “any physician, or panel of hospital-based physicians, claiming that Vitmin C is experimental, unapproved, and/or posing unwarranted risks to the health of a patient, is truly only demonstrating a complete and TOTAL ignorance or denial of scientific literature… Now I ask you, who might these nay-sayers be??  IMHO, brainwashed allopathic docs who don’t have a clue about the statements they make about Vitamin C and its benefits!!  Vitamin C IV’s have saved my life more times than I can count over the last 30 years….I have taken VitC IV’s in dosing as high as 100,000 thousands mgs….I take the BioEnerg-yC 20,000 mgs daily orally…  I gave my daughter 2000 mg THREE times daily when she began her monthly periods….NO PMS from her….LOL  She was also an athlete and was NEVER sick all through high school…BTW, the doctors which give me my Vitamin C IV’s are MD’s and DO’s, who have obtained their MD(h) license.  I say to those nay-sayers, prove to me it doesn’t work and prove to me it is dangerous.

When the companies ran trials on the value of VitC and came up with it didn’t do what they say it does, I ask, what mgs did you use…..GET THIS…500 mg…OMG, let me look at their foreheads, does it have STUPID stamped on it???  My 16 pound dog, get 4000mg in her gallon water pail…she is never sick either and over 10 yrs old….I give her Omega also….I also use my alternative modality machines….she loves them….we got rid of a worm/parasite infection she picked up at puppy park with my PhotonGenie machine….She also jumped off the bed, hurt her back and I used the Genie on her and increased her VitC…

If I hear one more time that VitC will give you kidney stones I will pick up a rock and hit the person that makes such a stupid statement….It isn’t VitC that causes kidney stone…DUH  Enough of my rant enjoy the following article…

A Personal Viewpoint by Thomas E. Levy, M.D., J.D.

(OMNS November 11, 2010) As a patient, you have the right to any therapy that is not prohibitively expensive, established to be effective, and not prohibitively toxic.

Any physician, or panel of hospital-based physicians, claiming that vitamin C is experimental, unapproved, and/or posing unwarranted risks to the health of the patient, is really only demonstrating a complete and total ignorance or denial of the scientific literature. A serious question as to what the real motivations might be in the withholding of such a therapy then arises.

A doctor has the right to refuse to see you or treat you. A doctor does not have the right to deny you any therapy that is inexpensive and known to be effective and nontoxic; if there is toxicity involved, the patient can discharge his responsibility for such toxicity with proper informed consent. A doctor does not have the right to deny you consultation with another doctor that may have conflicting medical points of view.

Just as ignorance of the law is no sound defense to legal charges brought against you, ignorance of medical fact is ultimately no sound defense for a doctor withholding valid treatment, especially when that information can be easily accessed

While a hospital may or may not have a legal right to dictate to its physicians what they may or may not do, the patient and the family of the patient have the legal right to sue that hospital for any negative outcome that is perceived to directly result from such interference in patient care.

How Doctors Use (Or Should Use) Vitamin Therapy

Experienced physicians have used massive amounts of vitamin C and other nutrients in treating an astonishing and nearly unbelievable variety of conditions. “Many physicians refuse to employ Vitamin C in the amounts suggested,” writes Dr. Klenner, “simply because it is counter to their fixed ideas of what is reasonable. There is no doubt that physicians are being brainwashed with the current journal advertising. I have never seen a patient that Vitamin C would not benefit.”

Dr. Klenner was board certified in diseases of the chest. The Shutes, in obstetrics. Dr. Cathcart, in orthopedic surgery. Dr. Smith, in pediatrics. Dr. Riordan, in psychiatry. Dr. Cameron, in surgery.

What you will learn from the documents above may be a good start, but it is only a start. We recommend that you read extensively and then discuss these physicians’ experience with your doctor before making any health decision.

(OMNS October 12, 2010) In massive doses, vitamin C (ascorbic acid) stops a cold within hours, stops influenza in a day or two, and stops viral pneumonia (pain, fever, cough) in two or three days. (1) It is a highly effective antihistamine, antiviral and antitoxin. It reduces inflammation and lowers fever. Administered intravenously, ascorbate kills cancer cells without harming healthy tissue. Many people therefore wonder, in the face of statements like these, why the medical professions have not embraced vitamin C therapy with open and grateful arms.

Probably the main roadblock to widespread examination and utilization of this all-too-simple technology is the equally widespread belief that there must be unknown dangers to tens of thousands of milligrams of ascorbic acid. Yet, since the time megascorbate therapy was introduced in the late 1940’s by Fred R. Klenner, M.D. (2), there has been an especially safe, and extremely effective track record to follow.

Still, for some, questions remain. Here is a sample of what readers have asked OMNS about vitamin C:

Is 2,000 mg/day of vitamin C a megadose?
No. Decades ago, Linus Pauling and Irwin Stone showed that most animals make at least that much (or more) per human body weight per day. (3,4)

Then why has the government set the “Safe Upper Limit for vitamin C at 2,000 mg/day?
Perhaps the reason is ignorance. According to nationwide data compiled by the American Association of Poison Control Centers, vitamin C (and the use of any other dietary supplement) does not kill anyone. (5)

Does vitamin C damage DNA?
No. If vitamin C harmed DNA, why do most animals make (not eat, but make) between 2,000 and 10,000 milligrams of vitamin C per human equivalent body weight per day? Evolution would never so favor anything that harms vital genetic material. White blood cells and male reproductive fluids contain unusually high quantities of ascorbate. Living, reproducing systems love vitamin C.

Vitamin deficiency and age-related disorders

Triage theory by world famous Bruce Ames explains why I am getting younger by the year. This world-class biochemist has provided the scientific documentation that we all have some small inborn errors of metabolism so we are not operating at our peak if we settle for RDA level of nutrients. His earlier work has provided the scientific framework validating my years of work in Orthomolecular Medicine. Now he has taken his tremendous knowledge of nutrition and has seen how this ties into mitochondrial diseases and aging.

This is the tip of the iceberg. You need to search on Bruce Ames and his close associate Les Packer PhD who have also explained how and why we need CoQ and Carnitine and the all R form of Lipoic acid if it is fully stabilized, to see age reversal in old rats. See his full page ad in every issue of Scientific America and learn more about why I do not just have rich urine when I take my multiple supplements each day. See my personal nutrition program on my website.

For many Professor Ames needs no introduction. In the 1970s, he invented the Ames test, a simple and inexpensive assay to check the mutagenicity of compounds. Since then he has dedicated his research to understanding the biochemistry of aging with a focus on mitochondria, the power plants of our cells, as well as how micronutrients may prevent disease, malnutrition, and obesity.

It is literally all about living for today. By understanding that nature favours survival today over tomorrow, a theory that vitamin inadequacy is behind the rise in chronic diseases “makes sense… and it is almost certainly going to be right,” says world-renowned scientist Bruce Ames.

In an exclusive interview with Stephen Daniells, Professor Bruce Ames from the University of California, Berkeley explains why his “triage theory” could have enormous implications for human health.

For many, Professor Ames needs no introduction. In the 1970s, he invented the Ames Test, a simple and inexpensive assay to check the mutagenicity of compounds. Since then he has dedicated his research to understanding the biochemistry of ageing, with a focus on mitochondria, the power plants of our cells, as well as how micronutrients may prevent disease, malnutrition, and obesity.

So, when the native New Yorker with over 450 scientific publications tells you his triage theory is “the most important thing I have ever worked on”, you sit up and listen.

Evolutionary mechanisms
Triage – from the French word trier meaning to sort, separate, or select – works on the battlefield by military doctors prioritising treatments depending on the probable survival of the wounded.

Prof Ames’ theory works in much the same way: By appreciating that natural selection favours short-term survival over the long-term, Prof Ames’ hypothesised that our short-term survival is achieved by prioritising the allocation of scarce micronutrients. In other words, to stop us falling over from a lack of iron in the heart, for example, iron is pulled from non-essential sources.

Dr. Andrew Weil (and Dr. Gordon) on Vitamin D

Linda’s comments:  I would NEVER be without my D-3….This was part of the problems I had with so many Cancers…My D-3 levels were in the toilet….Just a wakeUP call, you don’t get enough VitD from the sun or the toxic MILK you drink either….I take 15 thousand units daily and sometimes more.  When in doubt have your doctor run a blood test on you…while you are add it get your B12 and Magnesium levels checked.

Vitamin D is now essential to lower colon and breast cancer. And short term high dose Vitamin A for infections saves lives. Dr Weil finds Vitamin D long-term use for adults is TOTALLY SAFE at 2000 units a day. The Counsel for Responsible Nutrition believes it is totally safe at 10,000 units a day for adults but what about short term use in massive amounts like 50-100,000 for acute infections. This knowledge has almost been ignored and could have become lost.

My friend Dr Carl Reich MD in Canada was famous for treating ASTHMA and eliminating frequent hospitalizations in tough cases. He was using up to 50,000 units a week!  Of course they took his license but he changed the lives of nearly 10,000 patients! So it may be a long time until we fully appreciate the medical applications of aggressive Vitamin D therapy.

Vitamin A for treatment of most infections is safe and totally underutilized due to ignorance by medical profession. In the same vein as changing attitudes toward high dose vitamin D there is need to learn more about Vitamin A. The World Health Organization recommends the injections of children with 250,000 units of Vitamin A. This treatment is proven to save children’s lives daily around the world but long term use can affect bone growth so no one uses this fantastically effective therapy proving that a little knowledge is dangerous. No serious side effect of high dose for 5 days therapy up to 500,000 units a day for adults has been reported.

But with a few reports of relatively minor side effects related to long term use nothing serious with the 5 day use of high dose vitamin A is documented other than some increase in intracranial pressure leading to some headaches in perhaps 1-3% of patients but with dramatic recovery from infections.

So hopefully one day we will realize that the “side effects” incurred with nutritional therapy are rather benign. There are no reported deaths in the USA in 2008 from nutritional supplements yet those who become knowledgeable in Orthomolecular Medicine, as I am, have to be prepared for criticism from less enlightened colleagues who do not understand benefit to risk calculations. They think nothing of their being at least the 4th leading cause of death in the US but are quick to criticize those who use therapies that they know nothing about but which have tremendous potential for really helping patients!!

I am raising my recommendation of 1,000 IU of vitamin D per day to 2,000 IU per day. Since 2005, when I raised it from 400 to 1,000 IU, clinical evidence has been accumulating to suggest that a higher dose is more appropriate to help maintain optimum health.
We have known for many years that we need vitamin D to facilitate calcium absorption and promote bone mineralization. But newer research has shown that we also need it for protection against a number of serious diseases. In recent years, scientists have discovered that it may help to prevent several cancers, cardiovascular disease, autoimmune disorders, psoriasis, diabetes, psychosis, and respiratory infections including colds and flu.

To focus particularly on cancer prevention, two recent meta-analyses (in which data from multiple studies is combined) conducted by the Moores Cancer Center at the University of California at San Diego and colleagues suggested that raising blood levels of vitamin D could prevent one-half of the cases of breast cancer and two-thirds of the cases of colorectal cancer in the U.S. Discussing the breast cancer analysis, study author Cedric Garland, Dr.P.H., stated that “The serum level associated with a 50 percent reduction in risk could be maintained by taking 2,000 international units of vitamin D3 daily plus, when the weather permits, spending 10 to 15 minutes a day in the sun.” A 50 percent reduction in breast cancer deaths would have saved the lives of more than 20,000 American women in 2009.

“The Hidden Wikipedia” — deleted material about Nutritional Medicine

Linda’s comment: Ok this makes me fighten mad!!  I’m so sick and tired of so called intelligent people doing such low life actions like Wikipedia is doing!!!  Everyone who reads this needs to write to Wikipedia and make some noise.  I’m a FIVE time Cancer survivor and it sure as hell wasn’t with conventional medicine!!!    I’m sick and tired of the “in our face” constant pushing from the conventional/western boys/girls slamming what many of us know is blatant lies…..

They are doing this because they KNOW WE ARE RIGHT AND ARE DOING THE RIGHT THINGS BY RUNNING FROM THEIR TOXIC CHEMO.  They can’t get pattens to scarf up all the control and money off alternative protocols.  FOLLOW THE MONEY!!

Had I done the “cut & burn” I would be dead today.  Chemo and radiation is deadly and I ran like Forrest Gump from the cut and burn.  I’m alive and well BECAUSE I didn’t use conventional TOXIC DRUGS.  I’m sick of having the conventional/western treatments shoved in my face.

Please everyone, go to Wikipedia and raise some hell….ENOUGH IS ENOUGH….

The Hidden Wikipedia:
How to Find Deleted Material about Nutritional Medicine

(OMNS, May 11, 2010) There is nothing quite like a paper trail, and Wikipedia has one. Consequently, you can read for yourself all the material that has been added, and then deleted.

For example: Wikipedia’s page about Max Gerson, M.D., is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Max_Gerson . The doctor is widely known for the nutritional cancer therapy that bears his name. Gerson’s principal biographer is his grandson, Howard Straus http://www.doctoryourself.com/gersonbio.htm . Mr. Straus tells the Orthomolecular Medicine News Service of some interesting experiences he has had with Wikipedia bias:

“Some years ago, on seeing that the pages for Dr. Max Gerson and the Gerson Therapy were only stubs (short place-holders with little information on them), I took it upon myself to flesh out the pages. I thought Wikipedia was fairly neutral on balance, so I put in all the information that I could, and kept it factual with references, citations, and literature links.

“Within a month, the following had happened:

“The information was labeled as “biased” and “unreliable” because I am Dr. Gerson’s grandson and biographer. There appeared a big red flag at the top of the article labeling the articles neutrality “dubious.” The photograph I posted was removed. Provable, referenced facts, with dates and places, all suddenly became “claims,” even quotes from no less than Nobel Laureate Albert Schweitzer, M.D., who famously said: “I see in Dr. Max Gerson one of the most eminent geniuses in medical history.” Dr. Schweitzer and his wife were patients of Dr. Gerson, making this a first-hand account from a rather reliable source.

“All my links, references and citations were removed. They were replaced by links to the American Cancer Society and National Cancer Institute, which offer only criticism of the Gerson Therapy. Even quotations from published scientific papers were removed. Attempts to rectify these actions were immediately overwritten.

“It’s easy enough to show the progression of the pages, since Wikipedia displays former edits on request, dated and documented. One can verify this by clicking on the “History” tab at the top of the Max Gerson page, and looking at 2005 and before. My editing is archived at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/69.109.140.164 and also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Howard_Straus

“A second Wikipedia page, specific to the Gerson Therapy, has been completely removed. http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Gerson_therapy&redirect=no . To see something of what happened, you can click the “History” tab here as well.”

The OMNS adds just one other intriguing statement about Dr. Gerson’s work that is probably too “unreliable” to be seen on Wikipedia:

“I know of one patient who turned to Gerson Therapy having been told she was suffering from terminal cancer and would not survive another course of chemotherapy. Happily, seven years later, she is alive and well. So it is vital that, rather than dismissing such experiences, we should further investigate the beneficial nature of these treatments.” (H.R.H. Charles, Prince of Wales)

Max Gerson is not the only nutritionally-oriented physician whose work is slanted or censored at Wikipedia. Others include Matthias Rath, M.D., and Robert F. Cathcart III, M.D.

Vitamins and Teenagers: A Personal Statement
by Stephen H. Brown, PhD

(OMNS, Jan 26, 2010) In our house, vitamin supplements sit on the counter in open bowls like nuts, dried fruits, or jelly beans.

Colds, respiratory illnesses, intestinal viruses, mono, and other infectious diseases are constantly present in American schools. In response, my teenage kids have placed four bowls on the kitchen counter – a large one in the middle full of vitamin C surrounded by three smaller bowls of niacin, vitamin D, and thiamine tablets. They help themselves to the vitamins when they feel the need, and many of their friends have adopted the idea as well. Regularly, the kids report that the vitamins actually work. The most frequent comments are, “Wow, I can breath through my nose again!”, and “I was sure I was getting sick yesterday but I feel fine today.” Continued

RDA for Vitamin C is 10% of USDA Standard for Guinea Pigs

Wait a minute; that cannot possibly be true.

Can it?

The US Department of Agriculture states that “the Guinea pig’s vitamin C requirement is 10-15 mg per day under normal conditions and 15-25 mg per day if pregnant, lactating, or growing.” (1)

Well, that sounds reasonable. But how much is that compared to humans?

An adult guinea pig weighs about one kilogram (2.2 pounds). Guinea pigs therefore need between 10 and 25 milligrams of C per kilogram.
