New Odor Sensor Found in Mosquitoes

Full article: http://www.plosbiology.org/article/info:doi/10.1371/journal.pbio.1000467

Excerpt:

Researchers at Vanderbilt University have identified a new family of odor sensors that mosquitoes use to locate their prey. Their discovery could help explain the puzzling mechanisms behind the mosquito’s sense of smell and further the discovery of new deterrents and traps. Funded by NIAID, the study was published in the journal PLoS Biology in August 2010.

Mosquitoes’ olfactory system, or sense of smell, is crucial for their survival. Mosquitoes use it to identify mates and locate a host. While its importance is well-accepted, the exact mechanisms behind the mosquito’s olfactory system are poorly understood.

For about ten years, scientists have been examining Anopheles gambiae, the primary vector of malaria, and studying a set of odor sensors called AgORs (A. gambiae odorant receptors). Now, the Vanderbilt team, led by Laurence Zwiebel, Ph.D., has discovered a new set of receptors, AgIRs (A. gambiaevariant ionotropic receptors) by examining the larval olfactory system.

Old-Fashioned Play Dough

Kids can spend hours with play dough when they make it themselves. Make several batches of this and color each one a different color. This variation feels nice and silky, and, if properly stored, stays soft for a very long time.

Makes about 1 cup of play dough

1 cup flour (gluten FREE)
1/2 cup salt
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
2 tablespoons organic coconut oil
1 cup water
A few drops of organic food coloring.

Put all the ingredients, including the food coloring, in a saucepan and cook, stirring constantly, over medium heat until mixture thickens and holds together in a mass. Remove pan from heat and let the dough cool. Turn out onto a work surface and knead several times until soft, pliable and smooth. Use immediately or store in an airtight plastic container.

Averting inflammation by targeting the cytokine environment

Full article: http://www.nature.com/nrd/journal/v9/n9/full/nrd2805.html

Excerpt:

In 1957, a soluble factor that protected cells from viral infection was discovered by Isaacs and Lindenmann and named interferon (IFN)1, 2. This landmark finding set the stage for cytokine research. Since then more than 90 cytokines and cytokine receptors have been identified, nine of which are the basis for current therapeutics on the market3. Given the fundamental roles of cytokines in the development and pathogenesis of many inflammatory diseases, there has been extensive worldwide research and development focused on blocking or enhancing cytokine activity.

There are numerous clinical applications for targeting cytokines and include inflammatory diseases, cancer immunotherapy, bone disorders, metabolic diseases, wound healing and antiviral therapy. Although not all potential cytokine targets can be covered in this Review, we will outline some of the most effective and promising cytokine targets that have been linked to inflammatory diseases in preclinical and clinical studies in recent years. This selection is based on an established overview of the literature and is shaped by a viewpoint of the probable success or failure of targeting these cytokine pathways. Finally, we will discuss some of the issues facing the development of cytokine-targeted drugs with respect to the type of therapeutics being developed and the inherent redundancies in inflammatory cytokine networks.

Person in CDC Vaccine Cover-Up Takes Off With $2M

Full article: Central Figure in CDC Vaccine Cover-Up Absconds With $2M

A central figure behind the Center for Disease Control’s (CDC) claims disputing the link between vaccines and autism and other neurological disorders has disappeared after officials discovered massive fraud involving the theft of millions in taxpayer dollars. Danish police are investigating Dr. Poul Thorsen, who has vanished along with almost $2 million that he had supposedly spent on research.

Thorsen was a leading member of a Danish research group that wrote several key studies supporting CDC’s claims that the MMR vaccine and mercury-laden vaccines were safe for children. Thorsen’s 2003 Danish study reported a 20-fold increase in autism in Denmark after that country banned mercury based preservatives in its vaccines. His study concluded that mercury could therefore not be the culprit behind the autism epidemic.

His study has long been criticized as fraudulent since it failed to disclose that the increase was an artifact of new mandates requiring, for the first time, that autism cases be reported on the national registry. This new law and the opening of a clinic dedicated to autism treatment in Copenhagen accounted for the sudden rise in reported cases rather than, as Thorsen seemed to suggest, the removal of mercury from vaccines. Despite this obvious chicanery, CDC has long touted the study as the principal proof that mercury-laced vaccines are safe for infants and young children. Mainstream media, particularly the New York Times, has relied on this study as the basis for its public assurances that it is safe to inject young children with mercury — a potent neurotoxin — at concentrations hundreds of times over the U.S. safety limits.

Dumbing Down Society

Why is there so much mental illness? They how have a diagnostic category for everything, including shyness and a new drug to treat it is coming soon.

Is there a plan to dumb down our population or does it just seem that
way. There is a three part series on this topic and I will send you the link to those three and many other links that were recently send to an autism related group and I feel that many of the links on the full list will be interesting and valuable to read. This is just one from a list of over 30 topics that relate directly or indirectly to what is happening to our health.

This quote from the attached link is worth considering:

“The use of prescription pills might be of a great help for specific and properly diagnosed cases. The pharmaceutical industry however, which has many “friends” in the highest levels of government, is
pushing for the widespread use of psychiatric drugs within the public.
Since 2002, a great number of pills claiming to fix all kinds of mental conditions have been marketed to the public, but many of those pills were approved for sale without proper research for side effects.
Even worse: the side effects might have been known but hidden to the public. Below is a list of warnings issued on commonly sold psychiatric drugs. Some of those side effects are actually frightening as a pill should not be able to have that much power over the human brain. Think about it: Some drugs are subject to warnings because they can cause you to … commit suicide?”

Dumbing-Down-Part-I

Dumbing Down Society Part I: Foods, Beverages and Meds
ByVi gi l an t | June 28th, 2010 |

Is there a deliberate effort by the government to dumb down the masses? The statement is hard to prove but there exists a great amount of data proving that the ruling elite not only tolerates, but effectively introduces policies that have a detrimental effect on the physical and mental health of the population. This series of articles looks at the many ways the modern man is being dumbed down. Part I looks at the poisons found in everyday foods, beverages and medications.

Father Fights to Expose Cancer Cluster in Maryland

Linda’s comment:  These types of things are happening ALL OVER the USA, yet our government does their best to hide it by helping the industry??!!  It is time people stood up and DEMANDED the government take responsibility for their actions and hazards!!

(Aug. 21) — Two and a half years ago, Randy White’s daughter Kristen was diagnosed with brain cancer. She went through chemo, radiation and three brain biopsies, but nothing worked. Just 30 years old, she died in his house, in his arms.

“She was never sick a day in her life” before the cancer, White told AOL News.

Just two months after he had buried Kristen, White’s other daughter, Angie, was diagnosed with a highly abnormal stomach cancer, which doctors were able to successfully remove. But six weeks later, his ex-wife took a fall that revealed an advanced renal cell cancer. According to White, the doctors at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Fla., told them that these cases didn’t look genetic — they were environmental.

Discovery of Chronic Pain Gene

Chronic pain is a serious medical problem, afflicting approximately 20% of adults. Some individuals are more susceptible than others, and the degree of pain experienced after injury or surgery is known to be highly variable between patients, even under nearly identical circumstances.

The basis for this has remained largely unknown, prompting researchers to search for the contribution of genetics to chronic pain susceptibility. To accelerate research in this field, animal models are proving to be critical to understanding the underlying biology of chronic pain in human patients.

First, the international research team – led by Profs. Ariel Darvasi and Marshall Devor at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem and including scientists in Canada and Europe – identified a region of mouse chromosome 15 that likely contained a genetic variant or variants contributing to pain.

Cost analysis of asymmetric sensorineural hearing loss

Excerpt:

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS:: The purpose of this study is to critically evaluate the typical cost of asymmetrical sensorineural hearing loss (ASNHL) work-up, and to compare the positive predictive value from this common presenting symptom. STUDY DESIGN:: Retrospective chart review from two major otolaryngology centers. METHODS:: We reviewed charts from patients presenting to New York Eye and Ear Infirmary between January 1, 2006 and December 31, 2006, and the University of Minnesota between December 1, 2002 and November 30, 2007 with ASNHL. Diagnostic information included magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and serum laboratory values (antinuclear antibodies, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, Lyme, rapid plasma reagin, and thyroid-stimulating hormone). We calculated positive rate according to each item of diagnosis. To estimate cost-benefit, we further calculated the average cost for identifying a patient with a positive result.

CONCLUSIONS:: A comprehensive ASNHL work-up may not be applicable to all patients. Laboratory serologic tests are highly cost effective in diagnosing treatable causes of ASNHL, such as syphilis and Lyme. Although radiographic imaging with MRI is not as cost effective, its value in detecting for acoustic neuroma is undeniable. Laryngoscope, 2010.

Good ole Borax: The “miracle mineral”

Linda’s comment:  Good ole Borax has been around for years.  I can remember as a child my granny and mom using borax for cleaning.  Borax, Heinz White Vinegar, Clorox and ammonia was their best friends….Even though there are those, who are chemically sensitive, can not use Clorox or ammonia, it is still used today by thousands.

Sometimes referred to as “the miracle mineral,” this time-honored household ingredient is the natural solution for just about everything under your roof, from cleaning to insect control.

Borax, also known as sodium borate, is an a naturally occurring substance and an eco-friendly solution for many things around the house. Most commonly used as a cleaning agent, the uses extend far beyond that.

Talking with friends (ones far wiser than myself), and reading tips from Reader’s Digest,Laundry Goddess and Green Living Tips I’m excited to share all the ways you can use this natural element to your greatest advantage. Here are 25 to get you started. Let us know about your own special uses and we’ll keep updating the list.

(Safety Warning: Just because borax is natural, that doesn’t mean it’s harmless. You should always use gloves when handling it and keep it out of reach of children and pets. While safe in the diluted solutions, borax could be very harmful to children and pets if ingested.)

Antagonistic People Have Thicker Carotid Walls, Increased CVD Risk

Linda’s comment:  All of this can be avoided if people would discipline themselves and adopt the FIGHT protocol!!    At least the Beyond Chelation IMPROVED will lower the blood viscosity….I don’t know what it is going to take to make folks understand that allopathic medicine will NOT fix thick Carotid walls….All the white coats want to do it poke more toxic drugs into you INSTEAD of cleaning out the arteries and decreasing the CVD risk.  I get so frustrated when I hear about those who are having STROKES and heart attacks, when I know for a fact they CAN BE PREVENTED…

ListenUP folks and take charge of your own health care journeys…YOU are the leaders of your healthcare team and the white coats are merely members.  In the alternative world the doctors WELCOME the philosophy of patients, when the patient tells the doctor, they are their own healthcare leader…The alternative docs know that these types of patients can and will reach their wellness goals and work more closely with the holistic/alternative ways of healthcare!!  Makes the job of the alternative doctors much easier…

Make sure you review the FIGHT Webinars here on this blog…watch them over and over until you can get your head wrapped around the idea that you don’t have to suffer from strokes and heart attacks…..

Studying more than 5000 people in Sardinia, Italy, US scientists found that those who scored high for antagonistic traits on a standard personality test had greater thickening of the carotid arteries on ultrasound compared with people who were more agreeable. Intima-media thickness (IMT) of the carotid artery is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular events, say Dr Angelina R Sutin (National Institute on Aging, Baltimore, MD) and colleagues in their paper published online August 16, 2010 in Hypertension.

“We found that although men tended to have thicker arterial walls than women, antagonistic women had [thickness of] arterial walls similar to that of antagonistic men,” Sutin told heartwire . “So the association between antagonism and arterial thickness was much stronger for women.” And although arterial thickening is a sign of aging, young people with antagonistic traits already had such thickening, even after controlling for confounding factors such as smoking, she said.
